This month we are happy to have Adobe evangelist Paul Trani presenting...

New Tools and Drawing Techniques for Designers

Traditional drawing hasn't fundamentally changed for thousands of years, but the tools have. Going from a stick, to hammer and chisel, to today’s digital technologies. In this presentation you’ll see how you can draw and concept naturally and bring those ideas to life in the digital space. Using new hardware like Adobe Ink and Adobe Slide, and some amazing mobile apps you’ll see how easy it is to draw, capture, and create in a natural and intuitive way. Then see how you can seamlessly refine your work on your desktop without ever having to redo or trace or start over. Then, taking it a step further learn new techniques that really that those designs to the next level and share them with the creative community.

Paul is a fantastic speaker, and we are glad to have him back again. Space is limited, so sign up now.

Digital Potluck : Creating Virtual Environments

Monday, October 20th 2014 @6:30

This is a crash course in fast and experimental 3d modeling, texturing, as well as the very basics of video game design using the Unity game engine. Bring your own laptop and together we will create an entire 3D virtual sculpture exhibition from scratch in 90 minutes. By the end of the class, you will have a fully playable, first-person 3D environment populated with digital sculptures by your peers!

The workshop portion will be fun, freeform, and fast-paced, focusing on learning software skills through play, collaboration, and improvisation. A variety of techniques and software will be explored and will be tailored greatly to everyone's skill-level and interest.

This class explores software for artists focusing on results instead of best practices. It is perfect for the beginner or traditional artist/designer who is interested in coding and video games, but intimidated by the technical barriers of traditional computer-science focused programming classes. If you already have these technical skills, this class is a great way to open up your creative practice and learn to work in a way that is less structured.

Skills and tech explored: Unity3d, Basic 3d modeling and texturing, programming fundamentals. Bring your own laptop.

Chris Collins is a Chicago-based new media artist interested in the way relationships are mediated through technology. Addressing the awkward squirm of networked culture with humor and pathos, he creates absurd online platforms, participatory in-person events, videos, and video games. He has an undergraduate degree from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and his work has shown nationally and internationally, notably at the Museum of the Moving Image (New York), SFMOMA, MCA (Chicago), The Nerberger Museum of Art (Purchase, NY) and the Grimmuseum (Berlin)

AUG Chicago April Meeting

Modern Fonts, The Latest in Fonts for Print and Web

This month's AUG meeting is being taken over by the InDesign User Group. They have put together a couple presentations on Fonts that are sure to interest Print and Web designers alike.

Graphic Design, Desktop publishing, and even the Internet itself probably
would not exist (certainly not in their present form) without the development of outline fonts and the technology that supports them on our computer and handheld devices. Brochures, logos, publications, and websites are often made up exclusively of text and therefore depend on fonts.

Lately there have been some major changes in the availability of fonts especially for Adobe Creative Cloud subscribers. Included with your subscription are both the Typekit and Edge Web Font libraries. Hundreds of new fonts are now at your disposal for free for both print and web projects. But that doesn't mean you can use these or other fonts anyway you please. License restrictions and the incompatibility of certain font formats prevent you from using fonts in certain circumstances. High-profile lawsuits are driving font license compliance to the top of the creative news. Increased awareness of fonts in branding and new web font technologies are driving use of ?real? fonts on web sites.

Come to our next meeting to learn the latest about digital fonts and font technology. Learn how you can address these challenges with font management and web font services.

Jim Maivald and Clink Funk (InDesign User Group Co-leaders) will provide an overview of Adobe's current font technologies and how you can use them for print and web applications.

Guest speaker Jim Kidwell, Product Marketing Manager for Extensis, will describe the effective integration of fonts in creative workflows. Focusing on how effective font management can affect all levels of an organization?from the legal, creative and branding standpoints.

If you use fonts, you can't miss the next meeting of the Chicago InDesign User Group!

Quick recap of the last two Months

Sorry for not keeping everybody informed here about actvities over the last two months.

We are still here and here's what's been going on...

In December we had Laurie Ruhlin present us with some of the new features of Adobe Illustrator CC.

This month (Jan 2014) we had Ben Syverson and Jon Satrom of the creative group PoxParty here to tell us about their software.

What's going on next month?

There will be more information to come soon, but February we plan to have software developer Michael Schaffner in to show us how to get started developing for iOS.

Consider liking our facebook page. http://www.facebook.com/augchicago. All new information goes up there first.

AUG November Meeting - with webGL!

Monday, November 18th 2013

This month the Chicago Adobe Users Group brings you the combination of fine art
and the bleeding edge of browser technologies.

Now with the release of Internet Explorer 11, all of the modern browsers support
the hardware-accelerated 3d (and 2d) webGL drawing environment.

This is a true game changer (no pun intended) in the web-sphere. Artists, game developers, data visualizers and interactive designers will all have the power of high speed, efficiant, smooth animation in 2d and 3d, and across a growing number of devices.

This month's speaker is Nick Briz (http://nickbriz.com), a new media artist from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Nick has been using the power of webGL and video to create his intriguing artworks.

Come out this month and see what he's done and how he does it.
